  A Research Assistant or Research Associate position is immediately available at School of Computer Science and Engineering (SCSE), Nanyang Technological University (NTU). The successful candidate will join a research project on understanding and improving the system reliability and energy efficiency of data centers in Singapore's tropic environment. Through extensive experimentation on a newly built data center testbed that hosts nearly 100 servers, data analytics will be conducted to explore the basic relationships among server workload, computing performance, hardware component reliability, thermal condition, air flows, and etc. The candidate will work on programming and operating the testbed to generate massive data records of the state of the testbed. The candidate will also participate intensive research towards quality publications. Pursuing PhD degree in the position is possible.

  The candidate should have a Bachelor degree (for Project Officer position) or Master degree (for Research Associate position) in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or other relevant disciplines. The candidate is expected to have good knowledge in one or more of the following areas: sensors, sensor networks, computer networks, and computer architecture.   The Informatics Institute of the Faculty of Science is one of the large research institutes with the faculty, with a focus on complex information systems divided in two broad themes: 'Computational Systems' and 'Intelligent Systems.' The institute has a prominent international standing and is active in a dynamic scientific area, with a strong innovative character and an extensive portfolio of externally funded projects.

  World-class research groups directly involved in deep learning are ISIS (video intelligence led by Prof. C. Snoek), AMLAB (machine learning led by Prof. M. Welling), and ILPS (information retrieval led by Prof. M. de Rijke). Examples of industry funded research labs involved in deep learning are Qualcomm-UVA (QUVA) Lab (12 PhDs/Postdocs) and Bosch-UvA DELTA Lab (11 PhDs/Postdocs).

  Project description

  The primary goal of the two PhD projects is to perform cutting edge research in computer vision and deep learning to automatically detect activities in a multi-camera streaming video environment. Activities will be enriched by person and object detection to arrive at precise descriptions. Relevant research questions are: How can we automatically detect and track activities, as well as persons and objects, in cluttered scenes? What are the underlying mechanisms for spatiotemporal reasoning in video that improve activity detection? How can we enable activity detection and scene understanding from overlapping and non-overlapping (first-person) camera viewpoints? The work is executed as part of the IARPA DIVA research program, together with SRI International, the University of Michigan and the University of Washington. The positions are based at the University of Amsterdam and we expect that candidates are willing to attend yearly project meetings in the USA.

  Requirements

  Master degree in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, or related field;

  excellent programming skills (the project is in Python and C/C++);

  solid mathematics foundations, especially statistics and linear algebra;

  highly motivated;

  fluent in English, both written and spoken.

  Preferred starting date is May 2018.

  The appointment will be full-time (38 hours a week) for a period of four years (initial employment is 18 months). Periodic evaluations will be held after 9 and 14 months, and upon positive evaluation, the appointment will be extended to a total of 48 months. The appointment must lead to a dissertation (PhD thesis). An educational plan that includes attendance of courses, summer and/or winter schools, and national and international meetings will be drafted for the PhD candidate. The PhD candidate is also expected to assist in teaching of undergraduate students.

  The salary is in accordance with the university regulations for academic personnel. The salary will range from 2,222 (first year) up to a maximum of 2,840 (last year) before tax per month (scale P) based on a full-time appointment. There are also secondary benefits, such as 8% holiday allowance per year and the end of year allowance of 8.3%. The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities is applicable.

  A Ph.D. student position with full financial support is available in the research group of Prof. Chao Sun at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Louisiana State University. Prospective students with a M.S or B.S. degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Coastal and Offshore Engineering, Naval Architecture and other related majors are encouraged to apply. Students with research experience on wind engineering, computational fluid dynamics and structural dynamics are preferred.

  This is a four year research project. A competitive stipend of $25,000/year will be provided to student with tuition waiver. Successful candidate is expected to join in Fall 2018 to work on dynamics modeling and resilience enhancement of power distribution systems exposed to multiple hazards under the advisory of Prof. Chao Sun.
